Literacy Programs

We believe that education is essential to building a better world, and children are entirely important for the hope of a great future. The Janutica Foundation facilitates Literacy programs aimed at encouraging children to read and write. Here's how our literacy programs work:

Our first program is the writing program in which children ages 6-17 are paid to write! It begins when people like you send us any appropriate random photograph. It could be a picture of an object, a place, a person or anything child friendly. We take the collection of photographs to a group of children and give each child one photograph and ask them to write a short story about what they see, or what is happening in the photo. The children are encouraged to be creative and enjoy the act of writing.

After the children are done, we collect the stories from them and later put them on display at community events where the children can be present to read their stories to people, and where other children can come to write their own stories for pictures that don't have one yet. People from the community can buy the children's stories with your photo attached. The children receive three dollars of the donation for each of their stories that are sold, with anything extra going back into the foundation. This teaches the children that writing and creativity are not only fun, but rewarding.

If you would like, you can include with the photograph your name, and a description of what the photo actually is and where it was taken. (Please include this information separately, not written on the photograph.) This information will accompany your photo and the story written for it at our events, creating an interesting interplay between the fictional and non-fiction life of the photograph.

If you would like to know what the child who received your photograph imagined to go along with it, include a self addressed, stamped envelope with the contents you send us, as well as the three dollars to pay the child for their story, and we will send the photo and story back to you!

Our second program is the reading program book exchange. Any child appropriate donated books will be made available at our events for the children to take, read, return, and exchange for another book. This will be carried out entirely on "the honor system" teaching children about the value of honesty and responsibility, all while further encouraging children to read.

We want our programs to be available to underprivileged children, as well as those who may live too far to be personally present to take advantage of our programs. If you would like to help assist these children, you can send us blank, stamped envelopes, envelopes and/or postage separately, or money to help pay for postage, paper, and envelopes.

If you are a child, or a parent of a child who want to participate but are outside of the area, contact us by mail, (SASE appreciated) telephone, or email, and we will send you one of the donated photographs and return postage if needed.

Both of our literacy programs are offered in tandem and work to encourage the children involved to read and write more often, and to take part in their own education. When a child, or any individual becomes personally motivated to become more intelligent, nothing can stop that person from advancing. Together with The Janutica Foundation, you and others can encourage children to pursue knowledge, which means a better future for us all.

Thank you,
The Janutica Foundation
